RSI SmartCap truck caps

A truck cap built like the truck under it. The SmartCap is a modular stainless steel cap that turns the bed into secure, organized storage and a base for a roof rack or rooftop tent. We help you choose the model and accessories for how you use your truck, and install it at our shop in Arvada. We're an authorized SmartCap reseller. Caps start at $2,995 before installation, and the install takes about 2.5 to 3 hours; you can wait or drop the truck off.

Not fiberglass

Five stainless steel panels instead of one molded shell

SmartCap calls itself the world's first modular truck cap. Each cap is five stainless steel panels, welded and then bolted together, rather than a one-piece fiberglass shell. That changes how it is used: gullwing doors can open the side of the bed, the roof carries real weight, a damaged panel can be replaced on its own, and the whole cap comes off in about 15 minutes by SmartCap's count when you need the open bed. It is also why SmartCap is more of a bed system than a cover: racks, bins, MOLLE panels and camp kitchen parts bolt into the same structure.

The five models side by side

All five share the stainless steel construction, the positive-pressure air vent that pushes filtered air into the bed to keep road dust out, the roof rails, the roof ratings and the three-year warranty. What changes is the doors and the glass.

“We’ll be taking all our cars here. Eric and his team just did the 3M protective film on our new Tundra. The front bumper and grill are not simple applications, Eric made sure to talk us through what to look for if any of the film isn’t holding and to bring it back in and he’d fix it for us. He also tinted the front windows and they’re a perfect match to the rest. Their prices are very competitive, but it’s the absolutely top notch customer service, communication, and workmanship that make it an easy decision to come back. We’ll be getting our tonneau cover for our truck bed, ceramic coating for our older with a lot of life in her SUV, and will start using them to detail our cars given our great experience and the fact that everyone else continues to have the same.”

330 lb moving, 770 lb parked

SmartCap rates every EVO roof for 330 lb while the truck is moving and 770 lb while it is parked. Dynamic is driving down the road; static is parked at camp, with a tent open on the roof. The integrated rails take SmartCap's own racks, and SmartCap designed them to take many other rack systems; we check yours before it goes on.

Two cautions from SmartCap itself. On some trucks the cap is rated for more than the truck bed is, so the owner's manual has the final say. And SmartCap flags a possible bed-strength issue on the 2022 and later Toyota Tundra that owners have raised on forums. A rooftop tent build is the tent, the rack, the people and the gear against the truck's payload, and we plan it as one build.

Roof ratings are the maker's; your truck's payload still applies, and we check both before we quote.

Snow, ice and car washes

SmartCap seals the cap against the bed and says it is weatherproof when properly installed. We call it weather-resistant, as we do every topper. Two things are worth knowing before a Colorado winter. SmartCap's roof vent will leak under a high-pressure car wash, because the water is forced into the vent, so aim the wand elsewhere. And SmartCap says it is developing a new latch that opens from inside the cap and deals with freezing some owners in cold climates have reported, designed to retrofit current caps. In normal Front Range use, toppers don't typically have major recurring winter problems, though extreme conditions can affect latches, seals and moving parts.

Build around it: DECKED, racks and the rest of the truck

Buying the cap is where the build starts. SmartCap handles the enclosure, the side access and what goes on the roof. A DECKED drawer system handles organized storage on the bed floor underneath, which suits camping, hunting, contractors and mobile service trucks. We check that the drawers and the cap work together on your truck before ordering either one.

While the truck is here we can add the roof rack, crossbars, a rooftop tent, lighting, running boards and paint protection film on the bed rails. The question we start with is what you want the truck to do.

Which trucks it fits

SmartCap makes caps for late-model trucks only: the Ford F-150, Super Duty and Ranger, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra (1500 and HD), the Colorado and Canyon, the Ram 1500 and 2500/3500, the Toyota Tacoma and Tundra, and the Jeep Gladiator, by model and bed. It does not make an 8-foot long-bed cap, and a cap built for one generation will not fit an older one, because SmartCap designs each cap to the exact bed. Some applications sell out between production runs, and SmartCap posts the date of the next one. We order SmartCap through our distributor.

Installation

SmartCap installation at our Arvada shop

SmartCap ships the cap as panels and advertises installation in under 2 hours. We build it here. SmartCap backs its caps with a three-year limited warranty against manufacturer's defects, and it doesn't cover defects from improper assembly or installation.

1 · Confirm the fit and orderWe confirm the right SmartCap for your truck and bed, check it against anything already in the bed, and order it.
2 · Assemble and mountWe assemble the five panels, set the cap square on the rails, clamp it and set the seal.
3 · Wire and adjustWe connect the third brake light, adjust the gullwing doors and latches, and check the seals.
4 · Accessories and walkthroughRacks, bins and MOLLE accessories go on at the same visit, and we show you the doors, locks and vent before you leave.

A SmartCap takes about 2.5 to 3 hours in our shop, and you can wait or drop the truck off. The cap clamps to painted bed rails, so the install is a good time for paint protection film on the rails. Drop-off and pick-up hours: Mon–Fri · 8am–5pm.

FAQ

Common questions

Why is SmartCap so expensive?
It costs more than a basic shell because it is five stainless steel panels with gullwing doors, a positive-pressure vent, roof rails rated for 330 lb moving and 770 lb parked, and a three-year warranty as standard. SmartCap's own argument is that a fiberglass cap with the same features costs about the same. The Hatchback, without side doors, is the lowest-priced model.
What does a SmartCap do?
It encloses and locks the truck bed like any cap, and adds side access through gullwing doors on most models, a roof that carries a rack or rooftop tent, and mounting points for SmartCap's bins, MOLLE panels and racks inside and on top.
How much does a SmartCap cost?
SmartCap's own price list by truck starts at $2,995 for the Hatchback, $3,495 for the Defender and the Commercial, and $3,695 for the Adventure and the EVO Sport, which runs to $4,995 depending on the truck, before installation and accessories (checked 1 October 2026). Installation is quoted separately, for your truck and cap.
Is SmartCap legit?
Yes. SmartCap started in South Africa, builds its caps in two plants near Durban and one in Fort Worth, Texas, and sells in North America through SmartCap North America, which issues the three-year warranty.
Is SmartCap fiberglass?
No. Every SmartCap EVO model is five panels of stainless steel bolted together.
What's the difference between SmartCap Sport and Adventure?
The EVO Sport has glass gullwing doors with sliding vent windows. The EVO Adventure swaps them for double-walled stainless steel gullwing doors with MOLLE panels inside, which SmartCap rates for about 25 lb of gear with the standard struts.
Do all SmartCaps have gullwing side doors?
No. The Hatchback has solid side panels and opens only at the rear. The other four models have gullwing doors.
Can I take a SmartCap off?
Yes. SmartCap says the cap comes off or goes back on in about 15 minutes, which is how you get the open bed back for a tall load.
What is the SmartCap warranty?
SmartCap backs its caps with a three-year limited warranty against manufacturer's defects, from the date of purchase. It excludes defects from improper assembly or installation and most glass issues. The full terms are on SmartCap's warranty page.
SmartCap or WanderFox?
Both go beyond a fiberglass shell. SmartCap is stainless steel for late-model trucks with a three-year warranty; WanderFox is aluminum, fits many older trucks and 8-foot beds, and is based in Golden. We carry both and will help you compare them for your truck.WanderFox toppers →
