Truck tool boxes, fitted and installed in Arvada

A good truck tool box gives everything you carry a permanent place to live: tools, tie-downs, hitch equipment and recovery gear, instead of a pile rolling around the bed. We help you choose the box, confirm it fits your bed and install it at our shop in Arvada. A crossover or saddle box takes about an hour in our shop.

How to choose

Start with how you use the truck, then pick the brand

We can get tool boxes from a long list of makers, and we don't want this page to read like a parts catalog. Tell us what you carry, how you use the truck and what you want to spend. For the most capable box we sell, we start with the DECKED Tool Box. If the truck makes you money and you open the box ten times a day, WEATHER GUARD. For a well-built traditional aluminum box, UWS. For a good box without premium-box money, TrailFX. And if you carry more than a box can hold, look at drawers or a bed slide instead.

Five tool box styles, and what each one gives up

Every style trades bed space, rear-window view or reach for storage. Here is how they compare.

StyleWhere it sitsWho it suitsWhat to know
Crossover (saddle)Across the bed behind the cab, resting on the bed railsMost pickups: contractors, tow rigs, farm and ranch trucks, everyday ownersFits the widest range of trucks and leaves the floor under it mostly open. It takes the front of the bed.
Low-profile crossoverAcross the rails, with less of the box above themOwners who want a clearer rear window and a lower lookHolds less than a full-height box of the same length.
ChestDown inside the bed, below the rail lineOwners who want the box below the rail line, for a clear view out the back or room above itYou reach down into it, and it sits on the bed floor.
Side-mountAlong one or both bed railsService and fleet trucks, anyone carrying long materials down the middleYou reach tools from the ground without climbing in. Two side boxes plus a crossover is a common work-truck layout.
DrawersUnder a load deck across the whole bedOwners who carry a lot of different gear, for work and recreationOrganizes the whole bed and raises the floor. The DECKED Drawer System does not work with a gooseneck or 5th wheel hitch.

Wheel-well, underbody and specialty boxes

Wheel-well storage and swing-out cases like the UnderCover SwingCase add room for small items without a box across the front of the bed. Underbody boxes hang below the deck on flatbeds, service bodies and trailers. If a standard box doesn't fit your setup, this is where we look next.

“We’ll be taking all our cars here. Eric and his team just did the 3M protective film on our new Tundra. The front bumper and grill are not simple applications, Eric made sure to talk us through what to look for if any of the film isn’t holding and to bring it back in and he’d fix it for us. He also tinted the front windows and they’re a perfect match to the rest. Their prices are very competitive, but it’s the absolutely top notch customer service, communication, and workmanship that make it an easy decision to come back. We’ll be getting our tonneau cover for our truck bed, ceramic coating for our older with a lot of life in her SUV, and will start using them to detail our cars given our great experience and the fact that everyone else continues to have the same.”

DECKED Tool Box or a traditional aluminum box

There isn't one right answer. The DECKED Tool Box is where we start when someone asks for a really good box; a traditional aluminum box is still the right answer for plenty of trucks, for less money. The table sets DECKED's figures beside two traditional boxes we can order, from UWS and TrailFX. Our showroom has a full-size DECKED Drawer System display if you want to see the material in person; the Tool Box itself isn't on display yet.

Planning a tonneau cover or topper? Tell us before we choose the box

Some tool box and tonneau cover pairs work together. Others get in the way of the cover's rails, how it opens, the box lid or your reach into the bed. DECKED, for example, says its Tool Box works with select tonneau covers that install behind the tub. A chest below the rails, or a box made to sit under a cover, avoids most of that. The cheapest box today can become the expensive one if it blocks the cover you want next year.

A topper raises the same questions: box height, side-door access and window clearance. Tell us the finished truck you have in mind, not only what goes on today. We install tool box and tonneau pairs where products exist for your truck, and we check the fit before ordering, because not every pair works.

A tool box up front, a bed slide behind it

On a work truck this is a strong pairing: the box holds the small tools you use every day, and a CargoGlide or BEDSLIDE brings the generator, compressor or cooler to the tailgate. With DECKED's parts, the CargoGlide fits behind the DECKED Tool Box only in an 8-foot bed.

Gooseneck, 5th wheel or air bags: the box has to work around the hitch

If the truck has, or may one day have, a gooseneck or 5th wheel hitch, air bags or an auxiliary fuel tank, we plan the storage around it so the box never has to come out later. DECKED says its Drawer System is not compatible with gooseneck or 5th wheel hitches, and its Tool Box is, with at least 24 inches of depth and 6 inches of height clearance for the box.

Bed length, rail width and wheel wells decide the fit

Fit depends on the bed length, the width between the rails, the space between the wheel wells and the bed height, and it varies across the F-150, Silverado, Sierra, Ram, Tacoma, Tundra, Ranger and Gladiator. WEATHER GUARD tells owners to measure bed length, width and height and check for obstructions; the DECKED Tool Box needs 61.375 to 70.5 inches between the inside of the rails. Send us your year, make, model, bed length and what is already in the bed, and we confirm the box before ordering.

Installation

Installed at our Arvada shop

A traditional crossover box bolts to the rails with J-bolts; DECKED's Tool Box clamps on with no drilling. Fit and clearance are what the shop visit is for.

1 · Confirm the fitWe check the box against your bed, and against the tonneau cover, topper, slide or hitch that is on the truck or coming later.
2 · Mount and alignPads on the rails, the box set square and bolted or clamped, the lid clear of the cab.
3 · Check the clearancesTailgate, cover, topper and hitch clearance, then the locks, latches and lid struts.
4 · Walk you through itWe show you the locks and the lid before you leave.

In our shop, a traditional crossover or saddle box takes about an hour, and so does a DECKED Tool Box. Have a product already? Ask us first: we look at customer-supplied boxes case by case. Drop-off and pick-up hours: Mon–Fri · 8am–5pm.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the best truck tool box for the money?
It depends on what you carry. For a straightforward aluminum box, look at a TrailFX crossover: TrailFX lists its 69-inch low-profile box at $499 in its Brite finish and $599 in gloss black, before installation (1 October 2026). If you want more for the money, look at a UWS box with its foam-filled lid, or the DECKED Tool Box if you want the most capable box we sell.
Who makes good truck tool boxes?
We install boxes from four makers, among others: DECKED (a composite box and drawer systems), WEATHER GUARD (work-truck boxes built in Crystal Lake, Illinois), UWS (a Lippert brand, aluminum boxes built in Florida) and TrailFX (lower-priced aluminum boxes). Each suits a different owner, which is why we carry more than one.
Are truck bed tool boxes worth it?
If your tools, straps and hitch gear live loose in the bed or the back seat, yes: a locking box keeps them in one place, out of the weather and out of sight. If you carry a lot of different gear, a drawer system or a bed slide may suit you better than a box.All truck bed storage →
How much does a truck tool box cost?
Before installation, TrailFX crossover boxes list from $499, UWS from $584.95 and the DECKED Tool Box at $1,099.99 (1 October 2026). WEATHER GUARD doesn't publish retail prices. Installation is quoted separately, for your truck and box.
Can I use a tool box with a tonneau cover?
Often, yes, with the right pair. The cover has to install behind the box, or the box has to sit low enough to go under it. Tell us which cover you have or want and we will check both before ordering.Tonneau covers →
Can a tool box work with a truck topper?
Often, yes, once the box height, side-door access and window clearance are checked. A chest below the rails usually fits under a topper most easily.Truck toppers →
Do you install truck tool boxes?
Yes. We confirm the fit, order the box, install it at our Arvada shop and check it against the rest of the bed.
