Truck toppers, fitted and installed in Arvada

A truck topper (also called a truck cap or camper shell) can turn the bed into locked tool storage, a camping setup or the base for a roof rack. No one topper is right for everyone, so we sell soft, aluminum and stainless steel toppers from five makers, help you choose, and install it at our shop in Arvada. A topper takes about 1.5 to 3 hours in our shop, depending on the model, and you can wait or drop the truck off.

How to choose

Start with what the truck has to do, then pick the topper

Someone carrying tools every day needs a different topper from someone hauling camping gear on weekends, and someone who sometimes needs the whole bed open needs a different one again. Tell us what you carry, how often you need the bed open, whether you want side access or windows, and what you plan to add later, and we will narrow it to the toppers that fit. You do not need to know the brand before you call.

Three kinds

Soft, aluminum or stainless steel

A soft topper is fabric on a frame: the lightest and least expensive way to cover the bed, and it folds or comes off for tall cargo, but it gives up the security of a hard shell. An aluminum topper is a rigid, lockable shell without the weight of steel, with side doors, windows, roof rails or gear panels depending on the model. A stainless steel cap is bolted-together steel panels built for heavy use, big side doors and high roof ratings.

No material wins for every truck. Payload, roof loads, security, how often you leave pavement and budget decide it. We don't sell a fiberglass line today: the major fiberglass brands sell through protected territories, and none is open to us here.

A topper for work, or for camping and overland trips

For a work truck, tell us what rides in the bed and whether it stays there overnight; that decides how much security, side access and interior mounting matter. The SmartCap EVO Commercial and Defender, the DURACAP QUEST, the Westin EXP and the OVS Expedition each suit a working truck differently.

For a camping or overland truck, tell us about the rest of the build first: a rooftop tent, awning, crossbars, bikes, a fridge, DECKED drawers. We would rather plan it once than sell you a cap today that limits what you want to do six months from now.

Starting prices are the maker's current retail for the topper alone, checked 1 October 2026; installation is quoted for your truck. Toppers are sold by bed, not by badge. Bed lengths differ within one model line and beds change between generations, so send us the year, make, model and bed length and we will tell you which toppers fit before anything is ordered.

“We’ll be taking all our cars here. Eric and his team just did the 3M protective film on our new Tundra. The front bumper and grill are not simple applications, Eric made sure to talk us through what to look for if any of the film isn’t holding and to bring it back in and he’d fix it for us. He also tinted the front windows and they’re a perfect match to the rest. Their prices are very competitive, but it’s the absolutely top notch customer service, communication, and workmanship that make it an easy decision to come back. We’ll be getting our tonneau cover for our truck bed, ceramic coating for our older with a lot of life in her SUV, and will start using them to detail our cars given our great experience and the fact that everyone else continues to have the same.”

Cab-high or taller

Most of the toppers we carry sit at cab height: SmartCap builds its caps so the tallest point matches the crown of the cab, and WanderFox sets the Den and Super Den roof at the cab's high point. The WanderFox Super Den XL sits 5 to 6 inches taller for more room inside. Measure the garage door before you choose, and add the height of any rack or tent coming later. Cab-high is the most popular choice.

Planning a rooftop tent? Add up the whole build

Do not only ask whether the topper can hold a tent. Ask what the finished build weighs: tent, crossbars or rack, anything else on the roof, the people climbing in and the gear in the bed, all against the truck's payload. The topper, rack, tent and truck each have a limit, and the lowest one is the real limit. SmartCap notes that on some trucks its cap is rated for more than the truck bed, so the owner's manual has the final say.

Dynamic is the truck moving; static is the truck parked at camp. We sell and install racks and rooftop tents on compatible toppers, within the topper and rack makers' moving and parked ratings.

Plan the truck, then choose the topper and the drawers

When someone says "I need a topper," our next question is what the truck will eventually do: a rooftop tent, crossbars, bikes, an awning, DECKED drawers, recovery gear, a lift or bigger tires. Knowing the end goal lets us choose a topper that works for your truck today without limiting what you add tomorrow.

A topper encloses the bed, and DECKED organizes what sits underneath it. Together they give you drawers for tools, camping or hunting gear below, enclosed cargo space above and room for racks on the roof. We check that the truck, topper and drawers fit together before ordering.

Weather-resistant, not waterproof

Every topper we sell seals against the bed rails and tailgate, and several use double seals or positive-pressure vents against dust. We still do not call any of them waterproof: some water or dust can get in during a heavy storm, a high-pressure car wash or a long dirt road. SmartCap, for one, says its roof vent leaks under a high-pressure wash.

In winter, clear snow and ice off the roof before you drive, and do not force a frozen latch. SmartCap says it is developing a new latch for the freezing some cold-climate owners have reported, and WanderFox includes removable ice covers for its latches. In normal Front Range use, toppers don't typically have major recurring winter problems, though extreme conditions can affect latches, seals and moving parts. For anything specific to your topper, follow the maker's current guidance.

Lead time and installation

The makers rate installs from about half an hour (two people, OUTLANDER) to 1 to 2 hours (OVS Expedition) and about two hours (DURACAP), and modular caps are assembled from panels first. We special-order toppers rather than stock them, and lead time depends on the maker and what it has available when we order. In our shop, a SmartCap or WanderFox takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, a soft topper about 1.5 hours, other aluminum toppers about 2.5 hours and the stainless OVS Expedition PRO about 2.5 hours, and you can wait or drop the truck off.

Protect the rails and the cab

A topper clamps to the bed rails and seals along them, so the painted rails carry that pressure for as long as it is on. Autobahn self-healing film on the rails, and on the back of the cab where the topper sits close, protects the paint while it goes on and comes off.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the best truck topper?
There is no one best topper for every truck. It depends on what you carry, how much security you need, side access, windows, roof loads, budget and what you plan to add later. Tell us those and we will narrow the toppers we carry to the two or three that fit.
What are the disadvantages of truck toppers?
A hard topper adds weight (about 150 to 275 lb for a WanderFox, 198 to 272 lb for a SmartCap), gets in the way of loads taller than the cab, adds height at the garage door and takes two people to lift off. If your loads sit below the bed rails, a tonneau cover keeps the truck's low profile.Tonneau covers we install →
How much does a truck topper typically cost?
Before installation, the makers we carry list soft toppers from $999.99, aluminum caps from $2,262 and stainless steel caps from $2,995 (checked 1 October 2026). The truck, bed length, windows and doors move the price. Installation is quoted separately, for your truck and topper.
Do truck toppers hurt gas mileage?
A topper adds weight and changes how air moves over the bed, so expect some effect at highway speed. Taller toppers and roof loads add some drag.
What's the difference between a truck topper, truck cap and camper shell?
They are the same product. Topper, truck cap, camper shell and canopy all describe a shell mounted over the pickup bed, and which word people use mostly depends on where they learned to drive.Truck bed cap guide →
Can I use DECKED with a truck topper?
In many cases, yes. The topper encloses the bed and the DECKED drawers organize the floor underneath. We confirm fit for the specific truck and topper before ordering either one.DECKED drawer systems →
Can you add crossbars and racks?
Yes. SmartCap, WanderFox, OVS and Westin toppers have roof rails, and Agri-Cover sells a rack for the DURACAP. We fit compatible crossbars and racks at the same visit.
