BAKFlip MX4 hard folding tonneau cover

Usually our first recommendation for a tonneau cover. The MX4 gives you the security of a hard cover, sits nearly flush with the bed rails, and folds out of the way when you need the whole bed. We sell it and install it at our shop in Arvada. The cover starts at $1,199.99 before installation, and the install takes about 45 minutes; you're welcome to wait.

Our first recommendation

Why the MX4 is usually our first recommendation

There are a lot of tonneau covers on the market, and we sell several styles and brands. The MX4 is usually our first recommendation, because it strikes a good balance between security, looks, weather protection, everyday use and price. Closed, it sits nearly flush with the bed rails. Need something from the bed? Fold back a section. Need more room? Keep folding. Need the whole bed for something tall? Fold it up against the cab, secure it, and drive. For a lot of truck owners it is the sweet spot between an inexpensive soft cover and a more expensive retractable.

What changed in the current MX4

RealTruck sells the current MX4 as the Gen 3 (checked 1 October 2026), and we order the newest version made for your truck. Its aluminum top panels have high-density polymer cores, and RealTruck rates them 22 percent stronger than the original MX4. Closed, the cover is rated for 400 lb, evenly distributed. That rating is for weight spread across the cover, not for standing, sitting or setting a heavy point load on it.

The textured matte black finish sits nearly flush with the rails, so it changes the look of the truck very little, whether that is a daily-driven F-150, a work truck or a built Super Duty.

“We’ll be taking all our cars here. Eric and his team just did the 3M protective film on our new Tundra. The front bumper and grill are not simple applications, Eric made sure to talk us through what to look for if any of the film isn’t holding and to bring it back in and he’d fix it for us. He also tinted the front windows and they’re a perfect match to the rest. Their prices are very competitive, but it’s the absolutely top notch customer service, communication, and workmanship that make it an easy decision to come back. We’ll be getting our tonneau cover for our truck bed, ceramic coating for our older with a lot of life in her SUV, and will start using them to detail our cars given our great experience and the fact that everyone else continues to have the same.”

Full bed access without taking the cover off

A traditional tonneau cover can get in the way when you suddenly need your truck to do truck things. With the MX4 you open only as much of the bed as you need. The panels fold toward the cab in sections, and when you need all of it, the cover folds up against the cab, secures in place and stays there while you drive. RealTruck calls it 100 percent bed access.

Closed. Partly open. Full bed access. Open only as much of the MX4 as you need.

Security and Colorado weather

The hard panels and automatic latches keep what is in the bed out of sight and harder to get at. With the cover closed and the tailgate locked, the release mechanisms sit inside the bed. That makes the MX4 a good fit for tools, equipment, luggage, golf clubs and camping gear. It adds real security to the bed; no tonneau cover is theft-proof.

Snow, rain, road grime, dust and weather that changes by the hour are all reasons to keep cargo covered in Colorado. The Gen 3 has redesigned EPDM perimeter seals, tight-fit clamps, an integrated drainage system and, on most trucks, a longer dual-action tailgate seal. It is built to give very good weather protection, but no tonneau cover should be expected to keep a bed completely dry in every condition. Small amounts of water can get in during heavy rain, in a car wash or in extreme weather. We would rather say that before the sale.

In winter, clear snow and ice off the cover before you open it. In normal Front Range use, major winter problems are not typical, though extreme snow, ice or cold can affect any cover with moving parts. For seal and latch care, follow BAK's current guidance.

What we like, and what to know before buying one

We carry more than one brand and style because people use their trucks differently. The MX4 is an excellent choice for a lot of truck owners, and it is still not the right cover for everyone.

What we likeWhat to know before buying one
Security. Hard aluminum panels protect far more than a vinyl soft cover. It folds against the cab. That is how it gets full bed access, and folded all the way up it covers part of the rear window.
Full bed access. Fold it up instead of taking it off.It is weather-resistant, not waterproof. A little water can get in during heavy rain or a car wash.
A clean look. In our opinion, one of the best-looking tonneau installs there is.If you want the rear window clear and the cover out of sight, a retractable may suit you better.
Easy every day. Drop the tailgate, release the cover and fold back what you need. The 400 lb rating is evenly distributed. It is not a platform to stand on.
No canister taking up room at the front of the bed.The BAKFlip G2 costs less, but it is rated for 300 lb and carries a three-year warranty against the MX4's five.

Racks, DECKED and work trucks

Want to carry bikes, skis, kayaks, a cargo basket or a rooftop tent above the bed? Look at the MX4 TS. It is the same cover with T-slot rails that take compatible racks, crossbars, cargo holders and tents. Tell us before you choose a cover, because not every cover or truck offers the same options.

On trucks where both fit, the MX4 and a DECKED drawer system work well together: the cover secures and protects the top of the bed, and the drawers organize everything underneath. We sell and install both, so we check the fit and build the system together.

The hard panels, bed security and quick full-bed access also make the MX4 a strong choice for contractors, technicians and fleet trucks, and it can be part of a bigger work-truck build with a headache rack or other accessories. Compatibility varies by truck and accessory, so we verify the complete setup before ordering.

Common trucks

The MX4 is made for most common trucks, including the Ford F-150 and Super Duty, the Chevrolet Silverado, Ram trucks and the Toyota Tacoma.

Exact availability depends on the model year, bed length and bed configuration. Send us your year, make, model and bed length and we will confirm the right MX4 for your truck, check it against the accessories you already have, and get you current pricing.

Installation

Installation at our Arvada shop

The MX4 is designed as a fairly simple bolt-on cover: RealTruck rates the Gen 3 install at 30 minutes or less with a click-in clamp system. Proper fit still matters, and that is what the shop visit is for.

1 · Confirm the fitWe confirm the right application for your bed length and check it against any bed accessories you already have.
2 · Install and alignWe install and align the rails and the cover, and set the clamps so the panels sit square.
3 · Check that everything worksPanels, latches, tailgate, seals and drainage all get checked, then we make the final adjustments.

BAK
FAQ

Common questions

Is the BAKFlip MX4 worth it?
For a lot of truck owners, yes. It is usually our first recommendation because it balances security, looks, weather protection and full bed access at a price below most premium retractables. If you want the rear window clear with the cover open, or you mostly want a cover for less money, another style may suit you better, and we will tell you so.Compare tonneau covers →
What is the highest rated truck bed cover?
It depends on who is rating it and what you need. Hard folding, hard roll-up and retractable covers each win on something different. The MX4 is usually our first recommendation, and our buying guide compares the covers we install, style by style.Best tonneau covers, by type →
What's the difference between BAKFlip g2 and MX4?
Both are hard folding BAK covers that fold to the cab for full bed access. The G2 is the lower-priced cover, rated for 300 lb evenly distributed with a three-year warranty. The MX4 Gen 3 is rated for 400 lb evenly distributed, carries a five-year warranty and has the stronger polymer-core panels.
Is BAKFlip MX4 easy to break into?
It is much harder to get into than a soft cover. With the cover closed and the tailgate locked, the release mechanisms sit inside the bed, so a locked tailgate is part of the system. It gives the bed real security, but we do not call any tonneau cover theft-proof.
Is the BAKFlip MX4 waterproof?
We describe it as weather-resistant rather than waterproof. The MX4 uses perimeter seals and an integrated drainage system to manage water, but no tonneau cover should be expected to keep a truck bed completely dry in every weather or driving condition.
Can I drive with the BAKFlip MX4 completely open?
Yes. The MX4 folds up against the cab and secures in that position, so you have the full bed while you drive.
Can I open the tailgate without opening the MX4?
On most current MX4 applications, yes. A dual-action tailgate seal lets the tailgate open and close on its own. Application details vary, so we confirm it for your truck.
How much weight can the BAKFlip MX4 hold?
The current MX4 is rated for 400 lb, evenly distributed across the closed cover. That is not a rating for standing on it or for a heavy point load.
Does the BAKFlip MX4 work with bed liners?
It works with many common factory and aftermarket bed liners. Fit can vary with the liner and the truck, so we check your setup before ordering.
Can I use a rack with the BAKFlip MX4?
If you are planning a rack, look at the MX4 TS. It has T-slot rails built for compatible racks, crossbars and cargo accessories, and we can help you pick a setup that fits your truck.
Does the BAKFlip MX4 work with DECKED?
On compatible trucks, yes. The cover protects the top of the bed and the DECKED drawers organize the space underneath. Setups vary by truck, so we verify the fit before ordering either one.DECKED drawer systems →
How long does installation take?
RealTruck rates the Gen 3 MX4 at 30 minutes or less. Time in our shop depends on the truck, the bed setup and the accessories already on it. In our shop it takes about 45 minutes, and you're welcome to wait.
What is the BAKFlip MX4 warranty?
The Gen 3 MX4 carries a five-year BAK warranty from the original date of purchase, covering defects in materials and workmanship. The full terms are on BAK's warranty page.
What are the differences between the RetraxPRO MX and BAKFlip MX4 tonneau covers?
The MX4 folds toward the cab; the RetraxPRO MX slides into a canister at the front of the bed. The Retrax is rated for 500 lb evenly distributed, keeps the rear window clear and costs more. The MX4 leaves the front of the bed free of a canister.Retrax retractable covers →
