Quick picks by type
These are our picks, one for each way a cover opens. Prices are RealTruck’s retail range for the cover alone on 1 October 2026. Installation is quoted on top, and tonneau cover cost by type breaks that out.
| Style | Our pick | Price, cover only | Pro | Con |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soft roll-up | TruXedo Lo Pro | $520 to $570 | Lowest price of our five picks, and it comes off without tools | Vinyl with a latch and no lock |
| Hard folding | BAKFlip MX4 | $1,200 to $1,300 | Folds against the cab for 100 percent bed access | Folded up, it covers the rear window |
| Hard roll-up | BAK Revolver X4s | $1,400 to $1,550 | Rolls to the cab without covering the rear window | $200 to $250 more than the MX4 for the same 400 lb evenly distributed rating |
| Manual retractable | RetraxPRO MX | $2,150 to $2,350 | Opens partway and locks at any point along the track | The canister takes roughly 8 to 11 inches at the front of the bed |
| Electric retractable | Retrax PowertraxPRO MX | $2,800 to $3,000 | Opens and closes from the key fob | About $650 more than the manual PRO MX |
The MX4 is usually our first recommendation. It is rated for 400 lb evenly distributed, BAK says its Gen 3 panels are 22 percent stronger than the original MX4’s, and the maker puts the install at 30 minutes or less. The RetraxPRO MX carries more weight, up to 500 lb evenly distributed, and a limited lifetime warranty against the MX4’s five years.
Planning a rack? Three of these come in a version with T-slot rails for racks, cargo holders and tents: the RetraxPRO XR (from $2,299.99 at RealTruck), the BAKFlip MX4 TS (from $1,449.99) and the BAK Revolver X4ts (from $1,549.99). If the load needs to stand above the rails, a cap is the other option, and our truck bed caps guide covers them.
Every cover here clamps to the bed rails. On painted rails we can put paint protection film down before the clamps go on.
Hard folding vs retractable: the trade-offs in one table
| Hard folding (BAKFlip MX4) | Retractable (RetraxPRO MX) | |
|---|---|---|
| Bed space | Folds against the cab for 100 percent bed access; entry-level folding covers stop at two-thirds | The canister takes roughly 8 to 11 inches at the front of the bed |
| Rear window | Covered when the cover stands against the cab | Clear; the canister sits flush with the bed rails |
| Load rating | 400 lb evenly distributed (the category runs 300 to 600 lb evenly distributed) | 500 lb evenly distributed |
| Price, cover only | $1,200 to $1,300 (the category runs $600 to $1,600) | $2,150 to $2,350 manual, from $2,800 electric |
| Winter | Clear snow and ice before opening | Clear snow and ice before opening, and keep the tracks and drain tubes clear |
A hard folding cover costs less and gives you the whole bed. A retractable costs more, gives up a strip of bed to the canister, and opens to any length without leaving anything against the rear window. If you haul tall loads often, the folding cover’s full bed matters more. If you are in and out of the bed all day, a retractable opens as far as you need and locks there.
BAKFlip MX4 vs BAK Revolver X4s
Both are BAK covers rated for 400 lb evenly distributed with a five-year warranty, and both clamp on without drilling. They differ in how they open. The MX4 folds onto itself toward the cab for two-thirds of the bed, then stands against the cab on prop rods for the whole bed, and in that position it covers the rear window. The Revolver X4s rolls up toward the cab and straps in place, and BAK says it gives full bed access without blocking the rear window or cameras.
The MX4 is a set of rigid aluminum panels with an automatic latch. The Revolver is aluminum slats inside a one-piece vinyl skin, held down by rotating locking rails and slam latches. The MX4 costs $200 to $250 less and installs in 30 minutes or less, against less than an hour for the Revolver. In our shop, the MX4 is usually the easier all-around recommendation, because it costs less and suits many owners’ needs. The X4s is the one for an owner who wants a hard roll-up and the rear window clear with the cover open.
RetraxPRO MX vs PowertraxPRO MX
The PowertraxPRO MX is the PRO MX with a motor. Both use double-wall aluminum slats, both are rated for 500 lb evenly distributed, and both have drain tubes. The manual PRO MX locks with a key-lockable TraxLatch handle at any point along the track. The PowertraxPRO MX opens and closes completely from a button on the key fob, holds its position with electromagnetic brakes, and adds an LED cargo light.
It costs about $650 more at RealTruck ($2,799.99 against $2,149.99). Its warranty is prorated after 3 years, where the PRO MX carries a limited lifetime warranty. An electric cover also needs power from the truck, so the install includes wiring. We wire it the way Retrax specifies, normally straight to the battery through the required fuse, and the install takes about 2.5 hours in our shop against about 90 minutes for the PRO MX.
Which covers handle a Colorado winter
Every load rating on this page is for weight spread evenly across the cover: 400 lb evenly distributed for the MX4 and the Revolver X4s, and 500 lb evenly distributed for the Retrax covers. A drift piled against the cab is not spread evenly, so brush the snow off rather than drive around with it. The Lo Pro’s maker page lists no load rating at all, so treat a soft cover as something to clear after every storm.
Ice causes more trouble than weight. BAK and Retrax both say a cover must be free of snow and ice before you open it. Retrax’s care instructions say not to force a cover that has iced over after an ice storm or a car wash: tap around the perimeter by hand until it frees, use lock de-icer on a frozen key lock, and put dry graphite on the lock to help stop it freezing. Retrax rates the PRO MX for temperatures from 40 below zero to 180 degrees Fahrenheit.
Do retractable covers freeze? They can. RealTruck says sealed bearing systems resist ice and grit better than open tracks, and the Retrax drain tubes carry water out of the canister and through the bed floor. A blocked drain tube leaves that water where it can freeze. In normal Front Range use, major winter problems are not typical, though extreme snow, ice or cold can affect any cover with moving parts, and a Retrax can need an adjustment from time to time.
Hail is the other Colorado question. None of the maker pages for these five covers gives a hail rating. The materials differ: vinyl on the Lo Pro, vinyl over aluminum slats on the Revolver X4s, aluminum panels on the MX4 and double-wall aluminum slats on the Retrax covers.
Best tonneau covers for the F-150
Ford builds the 2026 F-150 with three box lengths: 5.5 ft (SuperCrew, Tremor and Raptor), 6.5 ft (Regular Cab, SuperCab and SuperCrew) and 8 ft (Regular Cab). A cover is made for one box length, so the length comes before the brand.
What is the best folding tonneau cover for an F-150? Ours is the BAKFlip MX4, and RealTruck lists it among its F-150 covers along with the BAK Revolver X4s and the TruXedo Lo Pro. The MX4 suits most owners. The Revolver suits an owner who wants the rear window clear with the bed open, and the Lo Pro suits a budget under $600.
New tailgate designs, the Pro Access swing tailgate among them, can change which covers fit, so we check the maker’s application for your year and box before ordering.
Lomax or BAKFlip? The Access LOMAX hard tri-fold is the MX4’s closest rival on an F-150. Agri-Cover lists it from $1,312 MSRP (LOMAX covers start at $949 at our shop) against $1,199.99 for the MX4 at RealTruck (1 October 2026), and both are rated for 400 lb evenly distributed. The MX4 carries five years of warranty to the LOMAX’s three and has a drainage system; the LOMAX routes water off its hinges without gutters or drains and sits less than half an inch above the rails. We sell and install both, and there is a LOMAX display in our Arvada showroom, so you can see the cover before you buy. Everything else we fit to the truck is on our F-150 page.
Best tonneau covers for the Tacoma
Toyota builds the 2024 and later Tacoma with a 5 ft or 6 ft bed. The deck rail system is what changes the install. RealTruck says a BAK hard cover means taking the deck rails off and putting them back on drop brackets, so they keep working. A Retrax retractable leaves the rails in place but limits how far the cargo cleats slide, and a TruXedo soft cover mounts on large brackets that also shorten cleat travel. Tell us whether your Tacoma has the deck rails when you ask for a quote.
On a Tacoma, the BAKFlip MX4 is a common hard-cover choice, and we fit a lot of Access and TruXedo soft roll-ups for owners who want to spend less.
Our Tacoma page covers the racks, lifts and protection we fit to the same truck.
Do tonneau covers save gas?
The Fast Lane Truck measured a gain. On a 57-mile highway run in a 2022 Ram 1500 Classic regular cab with a long bed, the truck returned 19.533 mpg without a cover and 21.142 mpg with one: 1.61 mpg better, a 7.7 percent improvement over a short run.
Other tests found less. AmericanTrucks reports a 2007 SEMA wind tunnel estimate of about 1.8 percent for some covers, and a 2013 Consumer Reports test in which a soft cover cut fuel economy by 4 percent, from 22.3 mpg to 21.4 mpg at 65 mph. MythBusters found no significant change.
The figures differ because the tests do. TFL ran one truck on one short run. SEMA’s number is a drag estimate from a wind tunnel. Speed, the weight of the cover and the truck itself all move the result. Buy a cover for what it does for the bed, and count any highway mileage gain as uncertain.
Our five picks run $520 to $3,000 before installation
At retail, our five picks run from about $520 for the Lo Pro to about $3,000 for the PowertraxPRO MX, cover only. Installation is quoted for your truck and cover: in our shop a soft roll-up, hard folding or hard roll-up cover takes about 45 minutes, a manual retractable about 90 minutes and an electric retractable about 2.5 hours.
