Cover prices are RealTruck’s range for each cover on 1 October 2026; RealTruck publishes BAK, TruXedo and Retrax’s prices. They are not quotes. Across each type the market runs wider: soft covers start around $200 (RealTruck), hard folding covers run $600 to $1,600 (Automoblog), manual retractables run from about $900 to $2,500 and up, and electric retractables $2,500 to $2,900 and up (RealTruck). Pace Edwards lists starting prices from $1,191.19 to $2,937.44 across its retractables. Which type suits your truck is in our best tonneau covers guide.

What installation takes, and when you can skip it

Every cover in the table clamps on without drilling, and the makers’ own install times are short: 30 minutes or less for the BAKFlip MX4, and less than an hour for the Revolver X4s, the RetraxPRO MX and the Lo Pro.

So do tonneau covers need to be professionally installed? A clamp-on folding or roll-up cover does not, if you follow the instructions and take your time. A shop earns its fee where the job goes past the clamps:

  • a retractable, where the drain tubes carry water from the canister out through the bed floor
  • an electric cover, which needs power from the truck
  • a Tacoma with the deck rail system, where RealTruck says a BAK hard cover means taking the deck rails off and refitting them on drop brackets

Fit is the other reason. Leer says tonneau cover fitment depends on the truck’s make, model, model year and bed size, so a cover ordered for the wrong bed will not go on. Factory bed cameras and sensors don’t normally change a tonneau install on their own.

In our shop a soft roll-up, hard folding or hard roll-up cover takes about 45 minutes, a manual retractable about 90 minutes and an electric retractable about 2.5 hours, and you’re welcome to wait. Installation is quoted for your truck and cover.

Why tonneau covers cost what they do

A tonneau cover’s price follows what it is made of, how it locks, how it keeps water out and the warranty behind it.

Material

The Lo Pro is tear-resistant vinyl. The MX4 is aluminum panels, the Revolver X4s is aluminum slats inside a one-piece vinyl skin, and the Retrax covers are double-wall aluminum slats that roll into a canister. Panels and slats cost more and carry a load rating: 400 lb evenly distributed on the two BAK covers and 500 lb evenly distributed on the Retrax covers. The Lo Pro’s maker lists no load rating.

Locks

The Lo Pro closes with a single trigger latch. The MX4 latches itself as you close it. The Revolver uses rotating locking rails and slam latches, the RetraxPRO MX has a key-lockable handle that locks at any point along the track, and the PowertraxPRO MX holds its position with electromagnetic brakes and runs from a key fob.

Seals and drains

The MX4 has EPDM perimeter seals and a drainage system, the Revolver’s vinyl skin has no seams, and the Retrax covers have drain tubes. None of them is waterproof. Leer says tonneau covers are designed to be weather-resistant rather than completely waterproof.

Warranty length

Warranty does not follow price. The $520 Lo Pro and the RetraxPRO MX both carry a limited lifetime warranty, the MX4 and Revolver X4s carry five years, and the $2,800 PowertraxPRO MX’s warranty is prorated after 3 years. In Automoblog’s hard folding picks, warranties run from 3 years on the BAKFlip G2 to limited lifetime on the Gator EFX.

The add-ons that change the total

These parts can go on with a cover and change the total:

  • drain tube kits, which carry water from a retractable’s canister out through the bed floor
  • tailgate seal kits, which close the gap between the tailgate and the cover
  • T-slot rails for a rack. Three covers come with them built in, for $150 to $250 more than the standard version at RealTruck: the RetraxPRO XR from $2,299.99, the BAKFlip MX4 TS from $1,449.99 and the BAK Revolver X4ts from $1,549.99
  • rail spacers for a truck with a bedliner over the rails
  • paint protection film on painted bed rails and bed caps, put down before the clamps go on

Film on the rails is covered on the paint protection film page.

Is a tonneau cover worth it?

For a truck that carries tools, luggage or groceries in the bed, we think so. The case rests on security and weather more than on fuel.

Hard covers latch or lock, so the bed stays shut once the tailgate is locked. A soft roll-up hides the cargo, but vinyl can be cut.

A cover keeps snow and rain off the load, within limits. Leer calls covers weather-resistant, and the hard covers in the table are rated for 400 to 500 lb evenly distributed. The rating is for weight spread evenly, so brush off a drift piled against the cab. BAK and Retrax both say to clear snow and ice before opening. None of the maker pages for these covers gives a hail rating, so park inside when hail is forecast.

Fuel economy is the least certain part. The Fast Lane Truck measured 1.61 mpg better, 7.7 percent, on a 2022 Ram 1500 Classic with a long bed over a 57-mile highway run. AmericanTrucks reports a 2007 SEMA wind tunnel estimate of about 1.8 percent for some covers, and a 2013 Consumer Reports test in which a soft cover cut fuel economy by 4 percent. Treat a gain as possible, and do not buy a cover for it. Our best tonneau covers guide explains why the figures differ.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to get a tonneau cover installed?
The cover is most of it. At our shop, covers start at $399 for a soft roll-up and run to about $3,000 for an electric retractable. Our pick in each style sells for about $520 to $3,000 at retail, and installation is quoted for your truck and cover. In our shop a soft roll-up, hard folding or hard roll-up cover takes about 45 minutes, a manual retractable about 90 minutes and an electric retractable about 2.5 hours.
Why are tonneau covers so expensive?
Most of the price is in the materials, the locks and the seals. A soft roll-up is tear-resistant vinyl with a single latch. A hard folding cover is aluminum panels with perimeter seals and an automatic latch. A retractable adds double-wall aluminum slats, a canister, tracks and drain tubes, and an electric one adds a motor and a key fob. Warranty does not track price: the $520 TruXedo Lo Pro and the RetraxPRO MX both carry a limited lifetime warranty.
What is the best tonneau cover for the money?
For most owners, the BAKFlip MX4. It is usually our first recommendation, costs $1,200 to $1,300 for the cover, is rated for 400 lb evenly distributed and carries a five-year warranty. If the budget is under $600, the TruXedo Lo Pro soft roll-up is $520 to $570.Best tonneau covers, by type and truck →
Is it worth getting a tonneau cover?
For a truck that carries anything worth keeping dry or out of sight, yes. A hard cover latches or locks and keeps weather off the load, though no cover is waterproof. Fuel savings are uncertain: The Fast Lane Truck measured 1.61 mpg better on one truck over one short run, and Consumer Reports measured a loss with a soft cover.
How much should a tonneau cover cost?
At our shop, covers start at $399 for a soft roll-up, $899 for hard folding, $949 for a LOMAX and $1,199 for a manual retractable, before installation. For our picks, expect $520 to $570 for a soft roll-up like the TruXedo Lo Pro, $1,200 to $1,300 for a hard folding BAKFlip MX4, $1,400 to $1,550 for a hard roll-up BAK Revolver X4s, $2,150 to $2,350 for a manual RetraxPRO MX and $2,800 to $3,000 for an electric Retrax PowertraxPRO MX (RealTruck, 1 October 2026). Installation is quoted on top.
Is it safe to go through car wash with a tonneau cover?
Touchless or by hand, yes, for most covers. RealTruck says hard folding and retractable covers generally handle car washes, especially touchless ones, though brushes can scratch a hard cover and water can get into a retractable's canister. Soft covers can flap and stretch in a brush wash, so keep them to touchless or hand washing. At a self-serve bay, keep the pressure wand off the seams.
