Why we install it

Security and full bed access from one cover

The X4s pairs heavy-duty aluminum slats with a one-piece vinyl top, so the top reads as one clean surface with no panel joints. BAK's rotational locking rails fasten it along the full length of the bed. When you need the space, it rolls up toward the cab and straps in place, and RealTruck says it gives full bed access without blocking the rear window or cameras.

Revolver X4s or BAKFlip MX4?

Both are strong hard covers, and they suit different owners. The MX4 folds toward the cab in hard panels and stands up on prop rods for full access. The X4s rolls toward the cab and straps in place, which leaves more of the rear window clear. The X4s has a one-piece vinyl top with no joints; the MX4 has three hard panels with two joints. Both are rated for 400 lb evenly distributed and both carry five-year warranties. The MX4 is usually the lower price of the two, and it is usually our first recommendation.

If you want hard panels and a slightly lower price, look at the MX4. If you want the bed open without a folded cover in the rear window, the X4s is the one. The MX4 is usually the easier all-around recommendation, because it costs less and suits many owners' needs.

For a truck that does a different job every day

A lot of Colorado trucks work three jobs a week. Monday through Friday the bed carries tools or work equipment. Saturday it is skis, camping gear or hockey bags. Sunday you need the whole bed for a Home Depot run. The X4s is a hard, locked cover when you want the bed closed, and it rolls to the cab and straps there when you need all of it.

Next to a Retrax, the X4s keeps the front of the bed: there is no canister, so the bed floor keeps its full length. The trade-off is that the rolled cover sits above the front of the bed instead of disappearing, and you roll it by hand.

“You never know what you’re going to get when you google around, well I’m happy to say if you’re reading this you don’t need to search anymore! Professional, courteous, knowledgeable and a straight up pleasure to work with! Window tint…on point, ceramic coating…on point, ppf…on point, tonneau cover…great suggestion! “We’ll be taking all our cars here. Eric and his team just did the 3M protective film on our new Tundra. The front bumper and grill are not simple applications, Eric made sure to talk us through what to look for if any of the film isn’t holding and to bring it back in and he’d fix it for us. He also tinted the front windows and they’re a perfect match to the rest. Their prices are very competitive, but it’s the absolutely top notch customer service, communication, and workmanship that make it an easy decision to come back. We’ll be getting our tonneau cover for our truck bed, ceramic coating for our older with a lot of life in her SUV, and will start using them to detail our cars given our great experience and the fact that everyone else continues to have the same.”

Security and weather

The locking rails engage along the length of the bed and the automatic slam latches catch when you close it, so the cover locks with the tailgate. RealTruck gives it its highest security level (Level 3). No tonneau cover is theft-proof.

The one-piece top, flush side seals and an integrated bulkhead seal keep most rain, snow and dust out; like every cover, it is weather-resistant rather than waterproof. BAK's care rules are short: clean it with mild automotive soap and water only, and clear snow and ice off the cover before you roll it open. In normal Front Range use, major winter problems are not typical, though extreme snow, ice or cold can affect any cover with moving parts.

What owners report, and what we do about it

You will find three complaints about the Revolver online: slats separating from the vinyl, vinyl wearing on older covers, and gaps at the corners by the cab on some newer Tacomas and Frontiers. We would rather talk about them up front than have you find them in a forum after the sale.

Setting the rails square and the seals tight at install is most of what keeps a roll-up cover sealing and rolling properly.

Rack-ready: the Revolver X4ts

Planning to add crossbars, a bed rack, bike or kayak carriers or a rooftop tent later? The X4ts is the X4s with T-slot rails for compatible racks and accessories, so the cover still rolls up underneath. Tell us what you plan to carry before you choose a cover, because not every cover or truck offers the same options.

The X4s on a fifth-wheel truck

RealTruck lists the Revolver X4s as compatible with most 5th-wheel hitches. With no canister at the front of the bed, it is one of the covers we would show a heavy-duty truck owner who tows a fifth-wheel camper. It can work on a 5th wheel truck when the truck, hitch and cover combination supports it.

Compatibility still depends on the truck, the hitch and the bed, so tell us about the hitch before you order and we will check the whole setup.

The trucks we fit it to

The Revolver X4s is made for most full-size and mid-size pickups, including the Ford F-150 and Super Duty, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Ram, Toyota Tacoma and Tundra and Jeep Gladiator.

Exact availability depends on the model year, bed length and bed configuration. Send us your year, make, model and bed length and we will confirm the right cover.

Installation

Installation at our Arvada shop

The X4s clamps on with no drilling, and RealTruck rates the install at less than an hour. A shop install makes sure the rails sit square and the seals seal.

1 · Confirm the fitWe confirm the right cover for your bed length and check it against the accessories already in the bed.
2 · Install and square the railsWe clamp the rails on, square them to the bed and set the bulkhead and side seals.
3 · Check it rolls, latches and sealsWe roll it open and closed, check the latches and the tailgate, and make the final adjustments.
4 · Show you how it worksBefore you leave we show you how to roll it up, strap it and lock it.

The install takes about 45 minutes in our shop, and you're welcome to wait. The rails clamp onto painted bed rails, so the install is a good time to protect them: we can put paint protection film on the rails and bed caps at the same visit. Drop-off and pick-up hours: Mon–Fri · 8am–5pm.

FAQ

Common questions

Where can I buy a BAK Revolver X4s?
We sell it installed: we confirm the right part for your bed, install it, square the rails and seals, and show you how it works. Have a product already? Ask us first: we look at customer-supplied covers case by case.
Is BAKFlip MX4 worth the money?
For a lot of owners, yes. It is usually our first recommendation. It suits someone who wants hard panels and a slightly lower price; the X4s suits someone who wants the rear window clear with the bed open.About the BAKFlip MX4 →
What is the difference between bak revolver x2 and x4?
Both are BAK hard roll-up covers with aluminum slats, rotational locking rails, slam latches and a 400 lb evenly distributed rating. The X2 is the lower-priced version with a three-year warranty. The X4s carries a five-year warranty.
Which is better, the BAK Revolver X4s or the Truxedo Sentry CT?
They are close. Both are hard roll-ups over aluminum slats with 100 percent bed access, a 400 lb evenly distributed rating and a five-year warranty. The X4s uses a one-piece vinyl top and BAK's locking rails; the Sentry CT uses a woven canvas top and a lower install time. We install the X4s, and we will tell you honestly if the other suits your truck better.
How much weight can the Revolver X4s hold?
400 lb, evenly distributed across the closed cover. It is not a rating for standing on the cover or for a heavy point load.
Does the Revolver X4s work with a fifth-wheel hitch?
RealTruck lists it as compatible with most 5th-wheel hitches. We confirm it for your truck, hitch and bed before ordering.Fifth-wheel and gooseneck hitches →
Is the Revolver X4s waterproof?
Weather-resistant rather than waterproof. The side and bulkhead seals keep most water out, but no tonneau cover keeps a bed completely dry in every condition.
